Homeowner talking with a local plumber in a kitchen

About Birmingham Plumbing Service

This site is not a plumbing company, and nobody here shows up with a wrench. It exists to make one step easier: getting a homeowner with a leak, clog or cold shower in front of an independent local plumber who can look at it. When you send the form, a person reads what you wrote, replies, and connects you with a plumber who works in your part of the metro.

How the connection works

You describe the problem, where you are and how to reach you. We read the request, ask a question if something is unclear, and pass it to a local plumber who can quote the job. From there, the plumber you speak with sets the visit, the price and the terms, and the agreement is between you and them. It is worth stating plainly in one place. Birmingham Plumbing Service connects homeowners with independent local plumbers. Verify license and insurance before hiring. The plumber you are connected with should be able to answer every question below without hesitation.

Checking a license in Alabama

Plumbing and gas fitting in this state are regulated, and you can look up a plumber's license through the state board that licenses plumbers. Ask for the license number and check it before work starts. Gas line work and many water heater installs also need a permit and inspection from the city or county, so ask whether the quote includes them.

What to ask a plumber before hiring

A few questions sort out most surprises. Is the price in writing, and what does it cover and leave out? Will a camera go down the line before anyone recommends digging? A clogged main in a Forest Park house can be roots in a clay joint or a belly in old cast iron, and those are very different repairs. Is the work warrantied, and for how long? Who pulls the permit? Can the old part be shown to you after it comes out?

The water bill is part of the decision too. Birmingham Water Works supplies most of the metro from Lake Purdy and the Cahaba River, and Jefferson County runs the sewer system, with sewer rates among the highest in the country after the county's debt crisis. Since sewer charges follow the water you use, a toilet that runs all night costs more here than in most places, so small leaks are worth fixing early.

If something in your house is leaking, backing up or not heating, describe it on the form, including when the house was built if you know. You can also see the towns where we connect homeowners.
